Due to Hamburgs location and topography there is a need for dredging of accumulating sediments. Since 1990s, it was decided that the deepening of river Elbe was a critical matter since it was found that the sediments were highly contaminated and they needed to be treated before they could go into disposal. 4.1 River Elbe River Elbe is the third largest river in Central Europe after Danube and Rhine and in terms of length it covers a distance of 1091 km (727 km in Germany, 364 km in Czech Republic). Its catchment area goes through Prague, Dresden, Berlin and Hamburg. Especially around the city of Hamburg, where the port of Hamburg is allocated, river Elbe is influenced by the tide. 4.2 Environmental problems on River Elbe As we mentioned before river Elbe is influenced by the tide. This has as a result to have several sediments staying at the bottom of the river, and following that, the level of the seabed of the river is rising through time. In order to sustain the trade of the harbor by having free passage to ships, as well as keeping the harbor fully operational, the depth of river Elbe and thus the depth of navigation needed to be assured. Constant dredging was the answer to the problem to achieve that depth. At the beginning of the idea, the sediments that were dredged from river Elbe were used again for agriculture. However it was found that the dredged sentiments were contaminated with heavy metals (As, Cd, Hg, Zn) and organic contaminants (PCB, Dioxins, PAHs) which had great negative impacts to the environment (Heise, 2005). This pollution was a result of upstream industrial activities in the former GDR (German Democratic Republic) and Czech Republic such as pharmaceutical, chemicals from mini ng, pulp and paper, and leather-processing industries (Netzband et al., 2002). Until 2000 there were some measures that were taken in order to reduce this contamination, such as the treatment of the dredged sediments. This system was aparted from two sections. The first section was the pre-treatment which was the separation of the sediments into sand and contaminated silt fraction, and the main treatment was the dewatering process followed by the environmentally safe disposal of the silt. Both treatments were carried out by one large scale plant named METHA (Netzband, 2002). Since 2000 the sediments have been increasing 3 to 4 million m3 per year (HPA, 2005b). This is of great importance to Hamburg and its environment because from one point the sediments have to be dredged more quickly, due to the current needs of the harbor area and from another point the capacity of METHA has already been exceeded. As it is understandable the continuously dredging of river Elbe destroys its morphological environment, and from at the part of the pollutants we already have a decrease in oxygen, combined with the existence of contaminants we have a progressive destruction of the environment. Especially the summer time the oxygen depletion of river Elbe is great which results in a large number of fish kills. 4.3 Possible solutions Although the dredging of river Elbe is an issue that troubles researchers for over two decades, the impacts are not irreversible. Since the reason for deepening river Elbe is solely financial, it is suggested by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, that a second port should be opened as a deep water port, located at Wilhelmshaven and acting as a hub (HA, 2004a). This is one of the best ideas if it will be financially supported, so that the need of 24 hour navigation on river Elbe, regardless of the tide, will be eliminated as well as the need for dredging. Then in 1836, he helped to start the Transcendental Club. The Transcendental Club was formed for authors that were part of this historical movement. Emerson was a big part of this and practically initiated the entire club. As we know he was already a major part of the movement and know got himself involved more. Frayn is clearly presenting the naivety of the two children to humorous effect. Stephen tries to suggest an explanation for the mysterious x but as he tries in vain he realises,Hes somehow ahead of me again, and simply biding his time to tantalise me.Keith is clearly dominant over Stephen but this is not an unusual arrangement. Keith seems to have somewhat of a moral deficit and thus his and Stephens relationship is a dangerous one because Stephen is easily led. He is constantly making Stephen feel inferior whether it is verbally or by a disdainful silence. Keith castigates Stephen when he discovers that he hid his face in fear of the mysterious man. Even before Keith calls him a baby Stephen anticipa tes his reaction and feel ashamed. Keiths hypocrisy is revealed later on when he hides his face in fear. Stephen has internalised Keiths view of him and a lot of what he does out of shame. He goes out at night to make one heroic deed which will cause all his weaknesses and errors to be wiped away. A similar relationship exists in Litts deadkidsongs; Andrews psychopathic agenda draws the rest of gang into criminal activities. The full potency of Keith and Stephens relationship is revealed when they attack the tramp. Stephen seems to morph in Keith and shows a sadistic pleasure in scaring the tramp,I cant wait to see the comical terror on the old mans faceStephen is mimicking Keiths attitude. The bullied has transformed into the bully. Stephen relishes the chance to assert authority upon what he perceives to be a lesser being. There is a very ritualistic element to their friendship which Keith takes very seriously. Stephen realises by now that part of the reason for Keiths actions are what is happening in his house, he says,the crime hes punishing in me is not mine at all, but one thats being committed in his own house.Keith might be perceived as a lonely and abused boy exerting dominance over Stephen as some form of self validation. From the start links are drawn between Keith and his father and as the true extent of his fathers cruelty is realised so is Keiths. Keith goes from merely imitating his fathers half lidded stair and adopting affectations like old bean to outright violence. Keith and Stephen both begin a game but find themselves flung into the dangerous adult world. Together they cross the frontier into another country altogether. At the end it seems to be Stephen who comes out of the ordeal the worse. The inferiority Stephen feels at the expense of Keith is what motivates him to uncover the secret. Frayn uses the relationship to present how appearances c an be deceiving. At the start Frayn presents us a seemingly innocent and typical relationship. Iago appears to have very little reason to perform his notoriously villainous acts. His motive and reasoning is his joy of destruction, which seems to magnify into a passion by the final climatic scenes. Destruction is Iagos goal as well as sport. The motives behind his aim for destruction are too petty and minute to be able to make any justification in his attempts to destroy the lives of everyone around him. It is his lack of significant motive that forms him into the true devil. Iago is the evil force behind the plot, leading Othello into a tragic chain of disaster resulting in the murder of his own innocent wife. For all companionship that Iago offers his nai ve fellow characters, he intentionally defies their trust. William Robertson Turnbull, the critic, describes, Iago is an unbeliever in, and denier of, all things spiritual, who only acknowledges God, like Satan, to defy him. There are many levels within the play in which Iago is referred to as The Devil, therefore, the play is heavy in hellish and satanic imagery, particularly in the final scene. Shakespeare creates a successful villain who manipulates both audience and characters, seemingly narrating the events as if the story was his own. Iago tampers with the events and evidence, effectively playing the hand of God to create the intellectual masterpiece of his intrigue. As Leavis argues, It was the external evil, the malice of the demi-devil that turned a happy story about romantic love into a tragedy. It is debatable whether the play should have been titled after Iagos name rather than the hero that Shakespeare creates in Othello. It is illogical to argue that the outcome was fatalistic as Iagos plotting is so clear and blatant within his asides and monologues that the unfolding events rely on his actions and intellect to generate the outcome. Iago cleverly manipulates events throughout the entire play, until the end when the villainous character gets his comeuppance and is found out. He is put into a living hell, suggesting the idea that a punishment must fit the crime- the end of his speech will end all manipulation. Shakespearean audiences demanded morals and values to be displayed and therefore a punishment had to be undertaken by the playwright. The play ends on a damned Iago who will never speak again, entrapping himself into his hell, unable to manipulate with words again. This final scene is where the audience can truly see the villain as the devil; Iago has sealed his own fate. Iagos evil attributes are intensified as the play progresses as the audience are shown ruthlessness and revenge; he will not let anything disrupt his path to success. His motives are entirely self-orientated, it is clear that Iago does not have any compassion for any character, not even his own wife who he murders in the final scene as a last attempt to avoid discovery. Fie! Your sword upon a woman? This is a pivotal point within the final scene where the villainous demi-devil becomes apparent to the other characters on the stage. The audience is informed at the start of the play that he does in fact, hate the moor and this is reiterated frequently within the play. From Roderigo all he wants is his money; put money is thy purse is repeated eight times in one conversation with this particular victim, cleverly used to apparently persuade him to refrain from committing suicide. He tells Roderigo to avoid being a slave to morality and live for himself and act upon his own will, this highlights the distinct difference between Iagos actions and the actions of the other characters within the play, distinguishing a factor separating good from evil. Iago supposedly has the answers to everyones problems; he presents himself as an advisor, disguising his true intentions and creating a trustee and confidant for the other characters. While their lives fall apart around them, Iago immediately arrives on the scene to give a word of advice, which is why so many times he is referred to as Honest Iago. He toys with their emotions, changes their priorities to fit his own and works his black magic on them all. He lulls them into a false sense of hope and security that everything will be alright, even though it is clear to the audience that there is sinister meaning in it. Not only does he not care for their situations, but he in fact put them there and in addition he will immediately use their misfortune to his advantage, Thus I do ever make my fool my purse he says quite fittingly. He has tamed the situation so that every way meets his advantage, Whether he kill Cassio, or Cassio him, or each do kill the other, everyway makes my gain. Shakespeare uses Iagos asides to demonstrate his scheming and plotting. Iagos plans derive from an intense intellect and ability to manipulate a situation. In Act 2 Scene 3 Iago explores his own presentation as the devil. Not only does he describe how he will pour this pestilence into his ear, relating his words to venom dripping into the ears of his victims. He also describes his actions as, When devils will the blackest sin put on, They do suggest at first with heavenly shows. He suggests that he himself is the devil, performing his cunning and masterful scheme behind the mask of heavenly shows. He seems to relish in his manifesting ideas and evil intentions, pleasure and action make the hours seem short. Iago can be compared to a pantomime villain as the omniscient audience watch him twist the outcome, reveal his malicious intentions directly within his soliloquies and relish in an opportunity to accommodate other peoples actions to benefit his own fate, it almost feels appropriate to heckle Iago as he enters the stage. Shakespearean audiences would most likely have done so because his presentation as an evil character is so incontestable. Iago can be seen therefore as the epitome of evil; Shakespeare creates him as a liar, a murderer, selfish, lustful avenger and intellectual puppeteer. His captivation over the other characters ensures that he shall not be found out. It could be interpreted however that Iago is not as evil as he is portrayed. Iago has the intelligence to sculpt the outcome as he wishes, seizing all opportunity he can to do so. Othello appears to be in contrast, a highly unintelligent character, ridden with jealousy and gullibility. Othello is a fool to base all his evidence on the ocular proof of the handkerchief. The word in itself mocks him as he obsesses over it. His quick judgments to blame his wife who previously he loved so intensely shows his stupidity and fickleness. Iago may not be such a villain, and perhaps more of a man seeking revenge on the one who he thinks to have slept with his wife, I hate the Moor, and it is thought that twixt my sheets, hes done my office. Just as Othello seeks revenge on his own wife for the same reason, and yet Othello is entitled as the tragic hero. Iago is a murderer, however we cannot overlook the fact that so is Othello. Iago kills only his wife and Roderigo. All other killings were not by his own hand, but through the hand of others. Othello, the supposed hero of the play, also kills his own wife, without any concrete proof, only with Iagos suggestions that he often claims could be uncleanly apprehensions. The initial suggestion of Desdemonas infidelity is almost forced out of him. Iago kills Emilia as she betrays him as a wife; Othello was not forced to kill Desdemona by Iago. It is true that Iago does play a part in Othellos motive but Othello ultimately does have his own mind, although obviously his will power is not as strong as the average hero. However it is the lack of conscience and morals that Shakespeare highlights in Iago through murder, deception and robbery that distinguishes Othello as the hero, and Iago as the villain. Desdemonas murder occurs over 126 lines of Act 5 Scene 2. Othello justifies his reasons with his wife and the audience can view the tragedy through Othellos own emotional breakdown within this scene as he tries to come to terms with the justice that Iago has created for the reasoning behind killing Desdemona. In contrast, the murders undertaken by the hand of Iago are merciless, spontaneous and without moral reasoning or emotional effect on Iago. Like many other villains, Iago carries a strong, witty personality which makes some people identify with him as a character more strongly than with the hero. Every other character within the play could be viewed as insipid, feeble characters, without a real presence and likeability. It could be the lack of other strong characters that emphasises the opposing villainy in Iago. Iago in essence is just the brightest of the bunch, who mocks all others ignorance. As Iago dominates the majority of the play, using soliloquies and entering all but one scene, effectively taking the role of protagonist, he gives the audience an insight to his future machinations, thus making the audience omniscient and could therefore become more involved with his evil plans. The play Othello reflects the turn of a noble man into a monster through the temptations and machinations of the devil. Iago seems to have such a hold over his victim that Othello seems almost mindless or hypnotised. Shakespeare presents Iago as his villain with a cunning wit and the immense ability to manipulate any situation or person, thus ensnared my body and soul, as Othello describes. Iago seizes Othello and uses him as his puppet and tool for the composition of his plan. Iago acts as the inner voice, the tempting of the devil, towards his puppets, yet he remains discreet to make them his fools. Emilia knows that Iago is the cause and reveals the inner evil within her husband and does not hold back to display it. She does not attempt to save any of his dignity despite the role as his wife and a subservient woman, which contrasts to Desdemonas forgiveness of his sins previously. The final scene is where the animal imagery is cut and the imagery of hellish pits and demons take over, creating a diabolical ending where the devil is trapped within a living hell and the heavenly characters are spared in death. Shakespeare uses strong imagery of hell, roast me in sulphur, wash me in steep-down gulfs of liquid fire to emphasise the transition from a man with cruel intentions and intellectual plotting to a pure demonic character, overtaken with sin and murderous intent. Shakespeare does not allow Othello to kill Iago as proof. Othello says, if thou best a devil, I cannot kill thee. The final image upon the stage separates the good from the evil, as the three lay on the bed in tranquil death, and Iago watches them from a forcedly silent sideline, in his own personal hell. Shakespeare does not spare the characters representing heaven and goodness in life because if he did so, the true devil within Iago could not break out and be recognised, therefore there would be no tragedy. Shakespeare takes his character to the next level of villainy, comparing Iago with the ultimate evil: The Devil. Iago is an anti-hero, working alongside those who he is conspiring against. He has a complete lack of morals, which never seem to have been present, even at the outset he is presented as a thief. This absence of conscience creates the frequent associations with the Devil. Amir regrets that he wasnt mature enough to understand that Hassan is his best and only friend. He regrets that he wasnt strong enough to stand up for himself. He regrets how he was ignorant, and didnt know that Hassan is his brother. Throughout the novel, Amir has evolves into an entirely different character. He changes from a mean and jealous boy to a generous and kind man. Amir plants fistfuls of crumpled money under the mattress. He shows kindness to a stranger like Farid. This proves that Amir also evolves into a character that has empathy towards people, and changes into another level of kindness. He also evolves into a character that has more courage. As a child, he won’t fight people back and needs Hassan to help him. He also couldn’t stand up to the General but now he can finally stand up to the general, when he said to the general that, â€Å"you will never again refer to him as’ Hazara boy’ in my presence. He has a name and it’s Sohrab. † â€Å"There is a way to be good again†. These words come out from Rahim Khan’s mouth. He convinces Amir to be a good person after he finds out what Amir has done in the past. Amir tries to redeem himself by meeting with Rahim Khan and grants him his last request before he dies. He goes back to Afghanistan to help Sohrab out of that poor and dangerous place. This shows Amir’s commitment to Hassan. He redeems himself to Hassan. Amir would risk his life to go help Sohrab, even though he has other responsibilities like how he has his wife at America. If he dies in Afghanistan, it will really affect Soraya’s life. He even accepts Sohrab in his family and adopts him. It shows that Amir is really dedicated to this redemption. The novel shows the evolution of Amir as a character. He becomes more kind and generous to other people. He also redeems himself for the bad things that he did to his half brother. His regrets lead him to his redemption. After Amir finds out that Hassan is his half brother, and that he has passed away, that is when Amir starts to evolve into a different character. Hot and sticky, on an early September afternoon, I was sitting idly in traffic waiting for the light on Pensacola and Jefferson to turn green. With the music blaring, windows down, and a line of sweat slowly trickling down the back of my neck, my eyes were drawn to a group of people chatting in a run-down parking lot to my right. Behind them lay an old building into which the people were slowly making their way. It wasn't the building that held my attention it was the women in front of it. They were too fully dressed for the sweltering September afternoon, wearing long sleeved dresses and most with scarves covering their heads. All I could see of their bodies was the skin of their faces and hands. As the light turned green, I slowly inched forward hardly able to tear my eyes away from the women. I couldn't help but be intrigued as to why they would be dressed in such a manner at this time of year. As I rolled forward, my car came to a stop in front of a small sign, written first in g reen Arabic lettering and then in English: Al-Ansar Mosque: The Islamic Center of Tallahassee. Later in the week about the same time of day, I returned once again to the mosque, curious about the small building and hoping to grab another glimpse of the women. Stealthily, I spied from my car in a parking lot across the street from the mosque. While I waited, I again noticed how small the building seemed from my vantage point. The Renaissance developed a new and unique form of politics referred to as Despotism. Despotism is a form of government in which a single entity rules with absolute power. The single ruling entity may be an individual, as in an autocracy, or it may be a group, as in an oligarchy. The great Renaissance historian John Addington Symonds refers to the 14th and 15th Centuries in Italy as the â€Å"Age of the Despots. † It was under the tyrannies, in the midst of all the wars and revolutions, that the Italians were given the chance to develop their peculiar individuality. This individuality determined the qualities of the Renaissance and affected Europe as a whole. Italy, due to their unique form of politics, was able to lead the way in the education of Western races, and was the first to distinguish Classical and Medieval life. The conditions that led to this new form of Political government were distinctive to Italian urban life. By the 14th Century, Italy was divided into many principalities surrounding city-States. The cities were an integral part of life in Italy due to commerce, and Italians were the first to reap the benefits of new and increasing trade due to their favorable geographic position in the Mediterranean Sea. Because there was a constant political and class struggle in the cities, Italy lacked a central authority of power. In cities such as Florence, Pisa, and Milan, the age-old rival between Pope and Emperor played itself out. The Guelph party supported the Pope, while the Ghibbiline party supported the Emperor. Civil wars were fought in the cities and ended with a despotism system of ruling, either with an oligarchy or an autocracy. The forming of these authorities was crucial, because peace is essential for trade, and the surplus wealth from commerce is what led to the growth or art and literature, which began the Renaissance. The despots, who were the powerful rulers during despotism, were not from traditional dynasties, and therefore they reached their positions of power in various other ways. Some were appointed by the Holy Roman Emperor to assert his rule, as was the case for the Visconti of Milan in the 14th Century. Other despots were hired soldiers, who later became rulers of the cities they were hired to protect, as was the case for the Sforzas in Milan in the 15th Century. Some despots were elected Mayor of their towns, some controlled their town’s elections- as the Medici family in Florence did, and some despots ruled solely because they were the sons and nephews of Popes. Due to their various ways of gaining power, the despot was usually not from a traditional dynasty, and therefore they did not have the traditional loyalty of the people. Each despot had to gain the loyalty of the people either through a winning personality, or by being clever in the political game. The Despotic court had to set its own rules, which were eventually written down in the Book of the Courtier, which became the guide book for the courts of Early Modern Europe. The most important and the most influential work dealing on Despotism is Machiavelli’s The Prince, and Machiavelli is considered by some to be the father of modern Power Politics. The Italian Renaissance was essentially a mind-set, a collection of powerful attitudes and beliefs. The development of despotism pacified the country from the chaos of their constant civil wars, and allowed them peace, which was essential for trade. As commerce reopened, people began traveling freely, and the level of education began to rise as well as the amount of books that were read. All Quiet on the Western Front â€Å"The first bombs, the first explosion, burst into our hearts. † (Remarque 88) This is what the soldiers felt like in Erich Maria Remarque novel, All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul Baumer, a young man serving in the German army during World War One, is constantly being faced with the horrible and terrifying aspects of war. From seeing, his fellow soldiers lying dead on the battle field, to learning how to survive on the western front of the war.With his rifle by his side and his comrade’s right next to him, he knew what his job was to do in the war and that was to serve his country. Although Paul fought for his country in the War, Corrie Ten Boom a member of the Dutch reformed church was faced with the horrific scenes of seeing innocent Jews being put into Concentration Camps. Although, Paul enlisted inWorld War I to help his country and then realized what war really about, Corrie helped her country in World War II in a different way by helping the Jews hide in her house and even surviving a concentration camp herself .Paul Baumer and Corrie Ten Boom both had different influences and experiences before the start of the war. Paul was eager to join the war and wanted to what he could for his country and even Paul’s friend Katczinky said, â€Å"It would not be such a bad war if only one can get a little more sleep†(Remarque 2), this leads up to Paul’s friend volunteering for the war. Paul and his friends Leer, Muller and Kropp all enlisted in the war voluntarily â€Å"All four are nineteen years in age, and all four joined up from the same class as volunteers for the war .In the line we have had next to none, and fourteen days is a long time at one stretch† (Remarque 2). Propaganda also had a major part on influencing Paul Baumers to join the war â€Å"Enforced publicity has in our eyes restored the character of complete innocence to all these things† [war] (Remarque 8). Paul was also being pressured into joining the war by his teacher; a patriotic professor gave the students â€Å"long lectures until the whole of their class went, under his shepherding, to the district commandant and volunteered† (Remarque 11).His teacher always had the dream of transforming high school students into being a strong one’s self and he believed that joining the military was the way to do that and turning the students into strong â€Å"Iron Youth†(Remarque 19). Those who did not join the war would â€Å"have been ostracized †¦. but no one would ever stand out because at the time even one’s parents were ready with the word â€Å"coward†Ã¢â‚¬ (Remarque 11). The young students did not want to be thought of being disobedient to a higher authority because â€Å"the idea of authority†¦. as a greater insight and a more humane wisdom† (Remarque 12) and because of that Paul and the class volunteered their service in the war. Paul al so felt like it was his oneself duty to join the war and fight for his country because â€Å"We loved our country† (Remarque 13) and wanted to serve it† [the] duty to ones country is the greatest thing† (Remarque 13) Although, Paul wanted to serve his country on the war front Corrie Ten boom had a different start to World War II. Prior to the Holland’s involvement the country, was still at peace.Corrie Ten Booms family waited anxiously and gathered around the radio, for the Prime Minister of Holland’s announcement about the countries involvement in the war. On May 10th, 1940 at 9:30 P. M. , the announcement came through on the families radio the Prime minister announced there would be no war, and Holland would remain neutral. The voice stopped, and Corrie Ten Boom and her sister looked over at their father and saw a fire they had never seen before. Corries Ten Boom father said, â€Å"It is wrong to give people hope when there is no hope, there will be war.The Germans will attack and we will fall† ( Boom 78) Corrie Ten Boom felt that if father was so skilled at being optimistic, and so slow to believe in evil. Then there would be no other choice but war. Later that night, Corrie Ten Boom, sat right up in her bed because she heard bombs dropping outside her bedroom window and saw the sky turn a red-orange. The start of the war for Corrie Ten Boom is â€Å" The deepest Hell man can create† ( Moore 92) Corrie Ten Boom went to her sisters Tantes room and grabbed herself towards her sister, in the darkness and we threw our arms around each other and together said â€Å"war†.It was only five hours after the Prime Ministers speech. ( Boom 78-80). In the end, Paul Baumer and Corrie Ten Boom both got involved in the war but in a different way. Paul Baumers view on the World War I quickly changed; as he got more involved in the war, and his experience became abominable. The trench conditions that Paul and his comrades were living in got worse â€Å"I fling myself down and when I stand up the wall of the trench is plastered with smoking splinters, lumps of flesh, and bits of uniform† (Remarque 111).Paul’s physical conditions become worse and mentally it became a challenge â€Å"Night again. We are deadened by the strain-a deadly tension that scrapes along one’s spine like a gapped knife. Our legs refuse to move, our hands tremble, our bodies are thin skin stretched painfully†¦we have neither flesh nor muscle and longer† (Remarque 111). As the war continued to go on Paul began to lose feelings for his comrades who he cared so much for in the beginning â€Å"We [soldiers] have lost feeling for one another. We can hardly control ourselves†¦.We are insensible dead men through some dreadful trick are still able to run and kill† (Remarque 116). The soldier’s life now will forever be changed and will now be afraid of life because of what they have seen at war â€Å"I know nothing of life but despair, death, and fear. † (Remarque 263) Towards the end of the war, Paul’s Baumers view on the war had completely changed â€Å"We believe in such things but no longer do we believe in war† (Remarque 88). Although Paul Baumer served, his country on the war front Corrie Ten Boom served her country by saving hundreds of Jews lives.Corrie came from a family who were members of a Dutch reformed Christian church, which protested Nazi persecution of Jews as an injustice to fellow human beings and an affront to divine authority Holocaust encyclopedia. Corrie Ten Boom believed that God will lead her life and â€Å"We will never know how God will answer our prayers, but we can expect that he will get us involved in his plan†¦ (Moore 38). During the war, Corrie Ten Boom became involved in resistance efforts to hide the Jews.Family members would shelter young men sought by the Nazi, forced labor and assisted Jews in contact ing persons will to hide them. Corrie Ten Boom decided to get involved with the effort to help hide the Jews in her family home in Haarlem, Netherlands. Corrie Ten Boom was able to hide the Jews by using her job as a watchmaker in her father’s shop as a cover and building contacts with resistance workers. The hiding place was located behind a false wall in her bedroom at the top of the house was an area about two feet wide and eight feet long.The entrance to the hiding place was accessible by crawling through a wooden sliding panel at the back of the linen cupboard that was built into a false wall. When the German police come to Corrie’s Ten booms house on February 28, 1944 they did not find those in hiding, the hiding place had kept its secret however, the Ten Boom family was arrested and taken to the Scheveningan prison. Corrie described her feelings as she was being loaded into the van â€Å"In my heart was a great sense of peace. I had long expected this catastrop he.Now the blow had fallen†¦in my mind I kept telling myself Do not ever feel sorry for yourself† (Moore 102). In September 1944 Corrie was deported to the Ravensbruek concentration camp in Germany until her release in December 1944. After her release in 1944, Corrie traveled to America to tell her fascinating Story. Paul Baumer and Corrie Ten Boom both had some similar and different experience at the end of the war. For example, Paul describes the end of the war as â€Å"The cause of death like cancer and tuberculosis, like influenza and dysentery.The deaths are merely more frequent, more varied, and terrible† (Remarque 271). Paul Baulmer describes war as something were you see more death then you see survive. He admits that all war does is casue death, it’s like a sickness. Paul Baumers life will forever be changed. Corrie Ten Boom believed war was â€Å"The deepest Hell that Man Can Crete† (Moore 92) Both Paul Baumer and Corrie Ten Boom thought tha t war was a terrible and frightening event to go through. By the end of the novel Paul had become peaceful with himself â€Å"He [Paul] had fallen forward and lay on the earth as though sleeping†¦. is face had an expression of calm, as though almost glad the end had come† (Remarque 296). Corrie Ten Boom however, has to live on to tell her story about hiding the Jews and her survival in the concentration camps.
